Evoked by Sanden+Hodnekvam’s simplicity in form and interest in tectonic and material qualities, Alu is somewhere between a lamp and a sculpture.
Alu is made of assembled sheets of aluminium, interlocked by precut connections and stabilized by its own weight. The geometry is simple with square stacked volumes of aluminium sheets. The totem-like shape gives the small object a monumental appearance. The structure is assembled with visible joints. The design balances between industrial production and assembly by hand.
The composition of overlapping elements and the aluminium’s ability to reflect and diffuse light and color, create an object in constant change. The light source is mounted at the centre of the object. When turned on, the lamp is glare-free and the overlapping sheets give diffuse light and play of shadows. When turned off, the object reflects the surrounding environment to create vivid colors and patterns. The aluminium sheets are neutral in color, but reveal fascinating tones of green, blue and warmer tones, depending of the time of day, the changing seasons – and surrounding objects and plants.
Alu highlights the inherent qualities and softness of aluminium which is left untreated. Over time the surfaces will naturally patina and improve with age.
Sanden+Hodnekvam’s work balances between simplicity in form and richness in tectonics and atmospheres. They seek simple solutions with honesty of materials and construction in mind.
FORMAT LIGHTS are glowing icons. Tiny houses emitting a purely atmospheric light, while echoing the lines and proportions of new Norwegian architecture. An experiment where idea, form and scale changes format. The lamps embody buildings, or fragments of buildings, and kindle a play with the elements of volume, light and shadow. Each year a new office gets to do one lamp, with a one year lifespan. The first FORMAT LIGHT was launched at the 2016 100% Norway in London.
TECHNICAL
The lamp comes with a 3W LED module, with a magnet that is easily attached on the inside of the lamp. The 2 m cord is delivered with a USB plug and a wall adapter plug (EU). On/off switch. Non dimmable.
